So as much as it hurts to admit Ku'uipo is getting older and not moving around the same.
with that said, anyone recommend vitamins or supplements that can help with an aging dog?
im waiting for a stairs for the bed via amazon and get sad when i look at supplements and cant think straight...
shes on Solid Gold for food, and i brush her teeth a few times a week. I am really wanting to do right by her and provide for her. Vet said shes just aging but i worry and want only the best for her.
So any advice or suggestions are greatly appriciated :) |

I am of no help as I haven't ever owned a senior dog as an adult. I hate to think about Bristol getting old. I totally feel for you. :( How old is she now? |

I had Sandy on The Missing Link as a senior. I don't know if it made much of a difference. It's been so long. haha. She was also on Rimadyl and something else that I can't think of at the moment. |

Shes 7, but shes lot short legs and long body, kind of like a corgi. its like her zoomies, runs at the park, even our walks are causing her to take a longer recovery time :( vet doesnt think its arthritis as she moves around fine, its just the "day after" shes like nope. like a day at the gym for humans and we hurt after. she was whimpering jumping on and off the bed and the couches. i was worried she hurt her back or legs but her check up was good, she just honestly thinks shes aging and i know she can be a drama queen... took her on hikes before and shes whine for days after lol so its honestly hard to tell if shes really hurting or being a baby.. but it stresses me out so much because im like I WISH YOU COULD JUST TELL ME ;_; |

We gave our lab glucosamine tablets cuz he got so stiff in the morning, and that seemed to help! |

I haven't had any experience with vitamins for my dogs but both will be turning 10 this year and we give them Metacam for their joints. I know Ku isn't arthritic, but if she's stiff Glucosamine may be good for her (as Panthera said) but equally Metacam is a painkiller and I find that Ollie and Marley are swifter throughout the day once they've had it (and they run like Billio, they're super active so it just helps!). Just a thought! |

I think we gave our lab fish oil in the mornings, too, along with glucosamine. |

We use Metacam (or other NSAIDs like Carprofen), Tramadol, and/or Gabapentin to help with aging dog pain but typically don't start with prescriptions. The NSAIDs are great but we've seen GI upset in long term Metacam use (more so than Carprofen) and we require blood work monitoring every 6 months for dogs that are on them long term to watch the kidneys. In cases like this we normally try to start with the non-presciptions first and work our way up. I give my 16 yr old two things to help with her joint health as she's got a grade 2 luxating patella but we're not doing surgery due to age. She gets a fatty acid suppliment called AllerG3 (which is also good for heart health/skin/coat) and PhyCox Max which more of a natural antiflammatory/joint health chew. I'd like to change her diet to Hill's J/D but she wasn't a fan of it, picky little thing. I will say though, the personal dogs we have feed that diet to have done amazing. Our vet has a geriatric chocolate lab that has a world class arthiritic back (and overall joint arthrosis) and a maltese with knee issues, both dogs have improved significantly since being on the diet. We noticed they started to get work when the vet went out of town and we tried to feed the regular kennel food for a week. It's one of those things that you almost don't noticed until you try to go back to the old ways and all the sudden your dog can't move anymore. Another neat thing about J/D is that they're able to pack way more of the fatty acids/EPA/ect into the food vs what you could give in the oil suppliments that it makes those unnecessary to give the other suppliments. The skin and coat majorly benefit from it too. Wow, that turned out way longer than I intended. I promised I don't know all and I'm not a spokesperson for Hill's either xD but this is just a common thing to see as dogs get older. I'm sure other places do things differently than our client too so you always want to talk things over with your vet (since that's someone that actually knows your dog's history, unlike me haha). But feel free to ask me questions if you're confused about something. |

Can also try over the counter Cosequin vs. the second generation called Dasuquin. Adequan injections are another option to talk to you Vet about. They helped our older golden tremendously! She went back to playing like a puppy after the initial loading dose period...and needed injections every 3 weeks to maintain long term. Don't forget about Laser Therapy and Acupuncture too. Both can make a difference. Hope this helps too!
