Poutine!

This is a favorite comfort food in Quebec. It can be topped with almost anything. The original version is fries, cheese curds, and gravy, but that's not so fun. So here's one of my fave versions, inspired from a restaurant with the best poutines in Montréal, in my opinion.
BBO Poutine (beef, bacon, onion)
(Serves 2)
You'll need:
- fries (frozen or you can make them. I love steakhouse style, but regular ones will do)
- one spring onion aka green onion/shallot/scallion
- 400g minced meat (I used one with 10% fat, you can go leaner)
- a pack of bacon
- any brown sauce (gravy, brown onion, pepper sauce...)
- cheese curds*
*cheese curds are not available everywhere, so you can substitute with cheddar cut into cubes, or whatever you prefer. Sharp cheeses are best.
Instructions:
1. Put the fries into the oven. Prepare sauce as per instructions on the package.
2. Start by cooking the bacon. While it cooks, chop the onion. When the bacon is done, set it aside on a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Don't remove the bacon grease in the pan.
3. Cook the onions for about 2-3 minutes, until they soften a little.
4. Put the minced meat in the pan and break it up into small chunks. Stir it around and let it cook. Cut up your cheese in the meantime, or do it beforehand.
5. Meanwhile, break up the bacon and toss it into the pan to warm it up. Stir everything
6. Place fries into 2 bowls, put all toppings on top, and finish with the sauce. Mix it all up with your fork and enjoy!

Other topping ideas: - Pepperoni, bacon, mushrooms, onion - Philly cheese steak (just make small slices of meat and chop up some bell peppers and top with lots of cheese) - Top the original version with chopped hot dogs or sausages - Swap out the gravy in the original version for bolognese meat sauce - shredded chicken, bacon, onion Basically put anything you want. It can even be for breakfast: use breakfast-style potatoes in cubes (or keep fries), add cheese and sauce, and top with a fried egg and bacon too, if you want. |

On that list of things I've always wanted to try but never have. It just sounds like comfort food on a plate. Can't go wrong with gravy and cheese... Link Tree |
