Project Poker - A Tribute Dog

This is a very special project that I want to do on HP - It is very dear to my heart and even if you just read it then leave, it will still help me. I have played this game for almost a year and I am not a dog person usually, but about 2 weeks ago, I found out something very heartbreaking... Many people may/not know, but next to the Thoroughbred horse, Greyhounds are the second most commonly raced animal. Unfortunately, racing animals have the trouble of finding loving homes after their retirement or if they do not make it for their career; this is because people find them aggressive or too hyper as a common myth. It is very heartbreaking to know that because of these myths, these dogs are not given any sort of second chance..I hope to use Poker, my tribute dog, as a way of complete awareness about their plight. I want people to see what an amazing & sweet companion these flashy dogs can be, just like any other breed; my personal goal is to have a real ex-racer greyhound adopted during this project. If you're interested in helping me, please drop me a line. At this time, I am looking for cheap D-Tixs and private shows for Poker; even if you can not, I ask of you to look in your area for a Greyhound in a shelter. If one is there, and you or someone you know is wanting a dog, please give them some consideration. Please let me know if you have adopted {or already own} a Greyhound! Many of my friends know my b-day and being as I'm quite picky, I'm choosing it to be towards someone else. Please help me make this special project a wonderful present & a way of awareness for ex-racer Greyhounds!

A friend of mine had a former racer as a pet. He was the QUIETEST dog. Complete sweetheart, wonderful family pet. Greyhounds are also fantastic apartment dwellers despite their size. I haven't met a hyper one yet or an aggressive one for that matter. Would love to have one if I had the ability to get a dog. |

That's so cool, Abs! So glad - I haven't either, but it's a myth that goes around..I think the "Aggression" is more just shyness. The AKC even says that Greyhounds can become timid or seem aggressive if they're not given proper exercise; I think those are the "mean" Greyhounds and people just don't understand :/

It's a common breed misconception - just like the idea that Thoroughbreds are 'hot', Rotties are 'mean'. I'd say I'd go adopt one, but I'm already at my quota for animals in my house :p |

Agreed, Neke on both - Truly is a breed misconception. No dog/horse is ever really "mean". There's always some kinda reason behind it..

We see ex-racers at work and I've never seen a mean one. I actually love the breed after working with them and would love to adopt one some day. They always seem to be on the quiet/shy side except for this one male (he was a 3 y/o with a ton of personality) but never so timid that they snapped at anyone. |
