The Boykin Spaniel is a medium-sized breed developed in South Carolina, originally bred to hunt wild turkeys and ducks in the Wateree River Swamp. It holds the distinction of being South Carolina’s official state dog, where it was first discovered and refined by hunters in the early 1900s. A highly versatile hunting companion, the Boykin Spaniel excels as both a retriever and an upland flushing dog. Although it does not point game in the traditional sense, its tendency to pause before flushing - often mistaken for pointing - stems from its desire to flush birds with perfect timing. This trait likely comes from the influence of pointing breeds among the six to eight breeds used in its development. The Boykin’s deliberate flush allows the hunter to get into optimal position before the bird takes flight. Thanks to their stamina in warm climates and enthusiastic nature, Boykins are well-suited for dove, pheasant, and other upland game hunting. They’re also capable of helping drive deer and tracking wounded game. Compact and steady, their size makes them ideal for use in canoes or small boats - earning them the nickname, "the dog that doesn't rock the boat." |
