I got my first ever dog *solely* of my own!
I have lived out of home for 13 years and have owned anything from cats, fish, guinea pigs and rats. I currently own a cat and 3 rats. Last year, almost a year to the day, I lost my second cat Pixie when she had a seizure and needed to be pts. I knew after one of my pets passed away, I wanted a dog. It made complete sense to me because of my life situation and for safety sake.
After Pixie passed away I took some time to grieve and then decided to actively start looking for a dog to join my family. One of my support workers helped me in my search. I knew I needed to have a relatively small dog seeing as I live in a small unit/apartment. Six months after Pixie passed away, I came across a rather large dog who I put in interest for - I believe he was a Bull Arab lol (in hindsight this would've been a terrible idea!). At the same time my support worker heard of a friend who needed to give up her Poodle named Pippa. She didn't have the right family situation anymore and Pippa was suffering from major separation anxiety with her family being away from home 10 hours a day (and frustratingly she was used as a breeding machine and had 3 litters - her 3rd litter being weaned right before I got her. Her oldest litter is 2yo and she is only 3.5yo herself). I knew I wanted a slightly older dog, who was also small... and great with cats and other animals. Sounds like an impossible task right?! Well, Pippa ended up being my Unicorn!
Pippa is 3 years old. Has been with me now for just over 3 months. Got desexed the minute she was officially mine and has settled right in with me, my cat, my rats and loooves everyone she meets. Dogs and humans included! Her separation anxiety has lessened and she gets to spend almost all her time with me! I never ever would've imagined myself owning a Poodle. They were never my favourite breed. But Zomgosh. I will never be without a Miniature Poodle ever again. She is so smart, loving, affectionate, funny, dorky. This girl makes me laugh on the daily. She makes the funniest noises I never thought possible from a dog! lol. Whenever we go out in public she whines coz she wants to go say hello to the kids and dogs lol. She has never met a stranger! Everyone loves her! She has personality plus and plays catch with herself. She'll grab the ball, throw with her mouth and then bat it away with her paw so she can run and catch it lolol. She and I developed an instant bond.... and I honestly can't imagine life without her!
