Entry:
French Trotters are also sometimes referred to as Norman Trotters, after Normandy, their place of origin.

"There are no – or only very rarely – grey trotters, as is the case with the Standardbred or the Orlov." (x) I'll be petsitting that night, but hopefully I can get the wifi password and join in the chat party! |

The French Trotter breed was developed for harness racing. Harness horses race at the trot, and a French Trotter's trotting speed can equal that of a galloping Thoroughbred race horse. The breed is raced on a traditional dirt or grass harness course pulling a sulky, as well as under saddle and in a sport called skijoring, in which the French Trotter races on snow pulling a person on skis behind him.

It has become a common practice to remove the shoe of French trotters before racing particularly for the purpose of increasing speed and improving its gait. In spite of having the genes of the American Standardbred horse, the French Trotter possesses a two-beat diagonal gait, rather than the lateral two-beat or pacing gait. Getting recognized officially in the year 1922, this is the most available breed in France in the recent times. (http://www.horsebreedspictures.com/french-trotter.asp) |

Since the 70's an over-production of French Trotters has sent prices down. Considering that 60% of a given production does not qualify for the races, many horses become available for amateur riders or riding centers. A reformed 3 year old trotter broken-in to harness and saddle may be bought today for less than 1200 €. thanks wikipedia! |
